Nepal Earthquake - 2015


Background

On 25 April 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal approximately 81 km northwest of the capital, Kathmandu. On 12 May, in the midst of humanitarian efforts to respond to the first earthquake, another devastating earthquake with a 7.3 magnitude struck the country, causing further destruction in its epicentre, Dolakha District, and surrounding districts previously devastated by the 25 April quake

 

Key Facts:


  • More than 8.1 million people affected across 39 of Nepal’s 75 districts 
  • Around 2.8 million people living in the 14 most severely affected districts 
  • Over 279,330 houses damaged and 505,577 houses destroyed. 
  • Up to 90 per cent of health facilities in rural areas damaged

 

Causalities

 Over 9000 people were killed and 23000 were injured because of the earthquake.
